Germany moves to deport young Syrians without criminal records

Germany is preparing to deport young Syrians from the country even if they do not have criminal records, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday, reported dpa.

A ministry spokeswoman confirmed that the processing of asylum applications from Syrians had begun.

A primary goal, as Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told the Bild newspaper on Sunday, is to return to Syria "young, able-bodied men" who are requesting asylum.

Any deportations would require an agreement with the new government in Damascus.

Germany has not carried out direct deportations to Syria since 2012 due to the civil war. Restarting the processing of asylum applications is a first step in that direction.

In instances where Syrians have been ordered to leave in recent years, they have typically been transferred to another EU country responsible for their asylum claim, as it was where they first entered the bloc.

But the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's repressive regime in December changed the thinking in Berlin.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz's centre-right coalition, which took office in May, has vowed to take a tough stance on migration, including rejecting more asylum seekers – especially those with a criminal record.

In addition, Dobrint wants to deny asylum to Syrians who return to visit their country after having fled to Germany.
