Romania braces for 40 °C as heatwave alert expands

Romania's National Meteorological Administration has issued updated heatwave warnings on Sunday, extending the current yellow code alert for high temperatures to four counties and announcing further advisories for next week, reported Xinhua.

On Sunday, extreme heat and thermal discomfort are expected in southern Oltenia and southwestern Muntenia, with daytime highs around 35 degrees Celsius and tropical nights with lows of 19-20 degrees Celsius. The temperature-humidity index (ITU) is expected to reach or slightly exceed the critical threshold of 80 units.

Starting Monday, the heatwave will intensify and expand, with a yellow or orange code in effect for nearly half the country. Counties including Caras-Severin, Mehedinti, Dolj, Olt, and Teleorman will see highs between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius and nighttime lows between 19 and 23 degrees Celsius.

Florinela Georgescu, meteorologist, warned during a live broadcast on local media outlet Digi24 on Saturday that even hotter weather is expected by the middle of next week, with temperatures possibly reaching 40 degrees Celsius in southern Oltenia and Muntenia.

She explained that a hot air mass from northern Africa is driving the extreme heat across much of Europe. "We are on the northeastern edge of this heatwave, but we will still feel its full effects," she said, noting that the highest temperatures are forecast for southern Europe, especially Greece, and also parts of Romania in the coming days.

She added that capital Bucharest could also see highs around 40 degrees Celsius by mid-week.
