Employment among refugees in Germany close to nation's average: study

The employment rate of people who fled to Germany from Syria and other countries in crisis in 2015 is approaching the population average, according to a study released on Monday, reported dpa.

However, researchers at the Nuremberg Institute for Employment Research (IAB) noted a persistent and significant gap in terms of women's earnings and employment.

Of those who arrived 10 years ago, 64% were in stable employment last year, compared to an average of 70% for the population as a whole.

Of these, 90% of refugees were in jobs that require them to pay into the country's social security system, while the proportion for the overall population was similarly high at 92%.

Gender imbalance

The study showed that among male refugees, the employment rate at 76%, was actually 4 percentage points higher than the average for the male population.

But female refugee figures fell below the national average, with women with at least one child under the age of six showing a 21% employment rate and women without children at 40%.

"The greatest potential for more employment among refugees lies with women," said IAB research department head Yuliya Kosyakova. "However, the sometimes inadequate access to childcare remains a key hurdle to their integration into the labour market."

The earnings of refugees increased with the length of their stay. However, gross monthly earnings of those working full-time in 2023 averaged at €2,675 ($3,130) – 70% of the average of all full-time employees in Germany and just above the low-wage threshold of 66%.

The proportion of benefit recipients among those who moved to Germany in 2015 had fallen to around a third by 2023, but remained well above the population average.
