Germany resettles 2nd group of vulnerable Afghans from Pakistan

For the second time since the change in government, Afghan citizens with approval to resettle in Germany have departed Pakistan by plane, reported dpa.

According to a dpa journalist at Islamabad airport, the evacuees are being flown to Germany via a commercial flight with a stopover in Istanbul.

Earlier this month, 47 people from various German resettlement programmes for vulnerable Afghans were transported to Hanover via the same route and later distributed across German states.

Many Afghan families have been waiting in Pakistan's capital for months or even years. The previous German government suspended its programme for particularly vulnerable Afghans in May.

The programme was intended to take in former local staff of German institutions and their families, as well as Afghans at risk of Taliban persecution, including human rights lawyers and journalists.

Some of the evacuees have received visas despite the programme's suspension after winning court cases in Germany to secure their entry. Some of them are being supported by the German organization Kabul Luftbrücke, which translates to Kabul Airlift.

Currently, more than 2,000 Afghans in Pakistan under the programme are waiting for resettlement to Germany. Some have recently been detained in Pakistan and others have been deported to Afghanistan.
