German broadcaster amends Belfast riots report after Musk legal action

German broadcaster ZDF has removed parts of a report on the recent riots in Belfast following legal action taken by tech billionaire Elon Musk.

A German law firm had demanded a cease-and-desist letter regarding the opening segment of a ZDF news broadcast from June 12, the broadcaster confirmed to dpa upon request on Tuesday.

"ZDF has complied and removed the passage in question from the introduction," it said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Musk's lawyer Joachim Steinhöfel told dpa that he had asked the broadcaster to sign a cease-and-desist declaration over the June 12 news report on the riots in Belfast.

Several days of violent unrest unfolded in Belfast following a stabbing attack in the Northern Irish capital on June 8 in which the victim lost an eye. The suspected attacker, a Sudanese national, has been charged with attempted murder.

In the wake of the attack, far-right British activist Tommy Robinson had called for people to take to the streets in Belfast, in a post that was shared by Musk.

In the original introduction to the ZDF report, the news anchor stated that "a racist mob is hunting down migrants" in response to a viral video of the attack.

She said Robinson and Musk "instigated" the incident.

ZDF later added a disclaimer below the clip, acknowledging that the statement was "imprecise and therefore misleading."

The disclaimer has since been replaced with an advisory that parts of the introductory remarks have been removed "due to legal reasons."
