Environmental protests blockade Merz’s Chancellery during car summit

Environmental protests took place outside the Chancellery in Berlin on Thursday during a major summit for the car industry, reported dpa.
Greenpeace and Fridays for Future were among organizations calling on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to abandon efforts to overturn the EU's ban on new petrol and diesel cars by 2035.
Several vehicles were parked in front of the entrance to Merz's government office, temporarily blocking access.
Police were on site with several officers and secured the area. The licence plates of the vehicles were filmed, while some activists were detained.
Merz was holding talks in the capital with representatives of manufacturers, suppliers, trade unions and state officials, aiming to improve the fortunes of the country's struggling carmaking sector.
His conservative bloc is pushing for the EU's flagship policy to be reversed, but his coalition partners from the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) are resisting the move.
Earlier on Thursday, the coalition announced an agreement on a new effort to boost sales of electric vehicles through incentives for low and medium-income households.
