Young climber killed after fall near Austria's highest peak

A young German mountaineer has fallen several hundred metres to his death near Austria's highest peak, the Grossglockner, reported dpa.

Police in Tyrol said on Tuesday that the 29-year-old, from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, had been climbing alone in the area the previous day.

Three other climbers saw him suddenly fall while descending near the Teufelshorn (Devil's Horn), a peak close to the Grossglockner.

They immediately alerted rescue services. An emergency helicopter arrived quickly, but rescuers were only able to recover the man's body.

Police said weather conditions at the time were good. Further details about the cause of the accident were not available.

The Teufelshorn lies beside the Grossglockner, which at 3,798 metres is Austria's highest mountain.
