Two 23-year-olds die after train and car collide in Germany
A 23-year-old driver and his passenger of the same age have lost their lives in a collision with a train in southern Germany, reported dpa.
Despite the unguarded level crossing near the Bavarian town of Manching showing red flashing lights and a train approaching at full speed, the 23-year-old continued driving across the tracks, police said on Sunday.
The regional train coming from the city of Ingolstadt drove head-on into the right side of the car despite an emergency brake being applied immediately, the police said.
The two 23-year-olds presumably died instantly in the Saturday night collision. The car was hurled 25 metres into the adjacent embankment. The wreckage of the vehicle was scattered over more than 100 metres, the police said.
The train came to a stop after 600 metres. All 15 passengers on the train and the train attendant were uninjured. The 50-year-old train driver suffered severe shock and required medical treatment, the police said.
The train passengers were transported further by a replacement bus service. Train services were resumed early Sunday morning after an on-site inspection found no damage to the tracks.
According to police information, the light signal system for the level crossing was functioning correctly and showed red flashing lights.
