Spain marks 40th anniversary of EU accession treaty

Spain celebrated the 40th anniversary of its accession treaty to the European Union (EU) on Thursday, reported Xinhua.

Highlighting the firm will to move toward a future filled with hope, Spanish King Felipe VI said at an event marking the historic signing, "40 years later, we celebrate not just a date and a signature, but a decision, supported by broad consensus."

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said, "On June 12, 1985… our country signed what was much more than membership of the European Union. We signed peace with our own history and sealed its future forever."

He emphasized that over the past four decades, the Spanish people have lived through "the best years in our history."
