Search conducted at German house of Turkish consulate employee

A search has been conducted at the residence of a female employee of the Turkish Consulate General in Hürth near the western German city of Cologne on the orders of the Federal Prosecutor's Office, reported dpa.

There is an "initial suspicion of espionage," a spokeswoman for the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe told dpa on Friday, confirming an earlier report in the local newspaper Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger.

The search did not take place at the consulate but at the residence of the accused, the spokeswoman emphasized. The suspect remains at large, she said, adding that an initial suspicion is sufficient for a search. The spokeswoman did not provide further details.

Additionally, there is a second female suspect who has no connection to the consulate, the spokeswoman in Karlsruhe said.

The second suspect is a police officer of Turkish descent from Cologne, the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reported. She is alleged to have provided her contact at the consulate with information from the police computer about the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
