Rising costs prompt some Germans to scale back winter travel: survey

Rising costs and economic uncertainty are affecting winter travel and leisure plans for many Germans, a survey by YouGov commissioned by dpa shows.
The poll found that 15% of respondents plan to cut back on holiday plans, with a separate 15% reducing leisure activities. About a quarter said they would spend less on dining out, reported dpa referring to the survey.
Roughly 51% do not intend to scale back their winter leisure expenses.
The winter season in the Alps kicks off this pre-Christmas weekend.
YouGov surveyed 2,101 adults from December 8-10. Only 16% said they had winter vacation plans, 2% were undecided and 81% said no, highlighting that winter holidays remain less significant than summer trips for most Germans.
Cuts in German spending could have a broader impact on neighbouring countries, where Germans make up a large group of winter tourists. In Austria, nearly half of hotel guests last winter were from Germany, while in Switzerland the share was around 12%.
Despite concerns, Alpine resorts in all three countries are entering the season with optimism after visitor numbers rose last year.
