Poland seeks complete exemption from EU migrant relocation plan

Poland will not participate in the European Union's (EU) migrant relocation mechanism, Polish Minister of the Interior and Administration Marcin Kierwinski said Wednesday on social media platform X, reported Xinhua.

Poland has submitted a request to the European Commission for a full exemption, he noted.

In a ministry statement released on Wednesday, Kierwinski said Poland has borne enormous costs in protecting EU borders. "The decision allowing us to submit such a request means protection for many years, not just one," he said.

The European Commission said Tuesday that Poland and five other countries facing a significant migratory situation will be able to apply for full or partial exemptions under the EU's new Asylum and Migration Pact for the coming year.

The EU Council last year approved the reform of the pact on migration and asylum. EU governments will have three different options: relocate some asylum seekers to other EU states, pay 20,000 euros for each person they reject, or provide other measures (such as supporting operational activities at EU external borders).
