Nordic, Baltic countries to establish new cybersecurity consortium

A cybersecurity consortium (NBCC) is set to be established by the Nordic and Baltic countries, Lithuania's National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) announced on Thursday, reported Xinhua.

The consortium involves seven countries: Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Finland, and is aimed at boosting cybersecurity in the region, the Baltic News Service (BNS) quoted the center as saying.

"Cyber threats do not respect national borders, so closer cooperation between countries in the region is essential. A shared understanding of threats, common technological solutions, and a partnership based on trust are the key to greater resilience across the region," said Lithuania's Vice-Minister of Defense Tomas Godliauskas.

According to the NCSC, a regional data-sharing platform will be created to allow participating countries to obtain and share information about cyber threats detected in the region.

The center will expand its team of analysts, and its members will also provide information about cyber threats through the NBCC platform, contribute to the analysis of regional threats, and develop joint analytical products.

"By participating in the NBCC project, Lithuania will … will also strengthen its cyber resilience by having access to more detailed data on the most significant cyber threats in the Baltic and Nordic regions," said NCSC Director Antanas Aleknavicius.

The consortium platform will also be used to develop advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence-based solutions. Cooperation between the public sector, business, and scientific institutions will also be enhanced.

The project is scheduled to be implemented between 2026 and 2029. It is partly funded by the Digital Europe Programme, with a total budget of around 14 million euros (16.38 million U.S. dollars).

The consortium will be based in Copenhagen, with activities coordinated by the Danish Resilience Agency.
