Man arrested after drone incident at Frankfurt Airport

German police on Saturday confirmed another drone incident that resulted in the arrest of a person suspected of flying the device in the vicinity of the Frankfurt Airport, reported dpa.

The incident occurred on Friday morning – the same day drone sightings at the Munich Airport caused a major security alert and the temporary suspension of flight operations, with thousands of travellers affected at the Bavarian capital's airport.

But at Frankfurt, Germany's largest airport, there was no need to interrupt flight operations, since the drone was immediately secured in the no-fly zone, a police spokesman told dpa.

There were no indications that the 41-year-old man who was arrested had any connections to Russia, according to the spokesman. He now faces administrative proceedings and a possible fine.

It is not uncommon for private drones to fly illegally over prisons, airports and military bases in order to take prohibited photographs, the spokesman said. Inexpensive drones "are a dime a dozen these days," he added.

The federal police have a drone detection system at Frankfurt Airport, but note that airplane pilots and drivers repeatedly report such flying objects there.

Following the drone sightings on two consecutive evenings at Munich Airport, discussions are underway about improving security at airports in Germany.
