Lithuania to join Baltic Sea pact on undersea infrastructure security

Lithuania is set to join a regional agreement aimed at strengthening the protection of critical underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, reported Xinhua, quoting the Baltic News Service (BNS).

The Lithuanian government approved on Wednesday the Foreign Ministry's proposal to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Poland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, and the European Union.

The agreement is expected to be signed during a meeting of Baltic Sea foreign ministers in Estonia this Friday.

In February, Lithuania approved a national plan detailing how state institutions should respond to damage affecting undersea communication and power cables, following a series of incidents involving underwater infrastructure in the region over the past six months.
