Germany's Hannover Airport briefly halts flights after drone sighting

Flights at Germany's Hannover Airport were temporarily suspended late on Wednesday after a drone was spotted near the site, reported dpa, quoting police.

The airport was closed from 10:00 pm to 10:45 pm (2100–2145 GMT) after a pilot on approach reported seeing a drone, a police spokesman told dpa.

According to initial findings, the drone was flying over a nearby industrial area.

Three aircraft were diverted, the spokesman said. Other flights were able to land and take off later with delays.

One of the diverted planes had been scheduled to arrive from Frankfurt and was rerouted to Hamburg, dpa understands. The airport's press office was initially unavailable for comment.

Drone sightings have disrupted airport operations elsewhere in Germany in recent days.

On Sunday, flights at Bremen Airport were suspended for nearly an hour after a drone was spotted. On Friday evening, Berlin Brandenburg Airport was closed for about two hours for the same reason.

Drones pose a safety risk near airports. Flying them within a 1.5-kilometre radius is prohibited because they can interfere with take-offs and landings. Violations can be prosecuted as endangering air traffic.

Airports in Bremen and Hanover are regularly affected. Until the end of August, German air traffic control recorded four incidents involving drones at each airport this year, according to a drone report.
