Germany to fund $500m in US-made arms for Ukraine

Germany has announced it will contribute up to $500 million to purchasing US-made military equipment for Ukraine, reported dpa.

The German Defence Ministry and Foreign Office noted in the Wednesday announcement that the aid will be coordinated through a NATO mechanism called the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List.

NATO is overseeing the delivery of Ukraine-bound weapons purchased in the United States. Funding for the initiative is coming from European partners and Canada.

According to NATO, the aid will include military equipment that either cannot be produced by European manufacturers or can be delivered faster by the United States than by European allies or Canada.

"I commend Germany for stepping up once again. This delivery will help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression," said NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in a statement.

"Germany is the largest European contributor of military aid to Ukraine, and today's announcement further underlines its commitment to help the Ukrainian people defend their freedom and sovereignty," he added.
