German police arrest activists blocking tree-felling in Freiburg
Police in the south-western German city of Freiburg made six arrests on Saturday of activists seeking to prevent the felling of trees to make way for a new housing development, reported dpa.
Details on the reasons for the arrests were not made public. Police could also not say how many activists were still in the Langmattenwald woodland.
The activists had earlier been instructed to leave. Felling of the trees for the Dietenbach development began on Saturday, as the city blocked all entrance to the woodland.
Last weekend, a number of vehicles on the construction site were set alight. Police are investigating a case of arson. No one was injured.
Freiburg, a university city near Germany's borders with France and Switzerland, has a serious accommodation shortage. The new development is intended to provide housing for 16,000 people.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz travelled to the city for the construction start in February.
