German mayor-elect seriously injured in knife attack

Iris Stalzer, the newly elected mayor of the western German town of Herdecke, was seriously injured in a knife attack on Tuesday, according to German public broadcaster WDR, reported Xinhua.

The 57-year-old politician from the Social Democratic Party (SPD) was found at her residence with life-threatening injuries on Tuesday afternoon, WDR reported. She is currently receiving intensive medical treatment.

Stalzer won the mayoral election in late September in Herdecke, a town in Germany's Ruhr area, and was scheduled to take office next month.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the assault as "a heinous act" on the social media platform X, calling for a swift investigation and expressing deep concern for Stalzer's condition.

Other political leaders, including Matthias Miersch, head of the SPD's parliamentary group, also voiced concern and urged authorities to clarify the circumstances of the attack.

Police have not yet confirmed whether the assault was politically motivated.
