German FM backs Merz on partial arms halt to Israel
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Monday backed Chancellor Friedrich Merz's decision to halt certain arms exports to Israel, saying the move was justified and proportionate, reported dpa.
Wadephul, a member of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), told public broadcaster ZDF that he had been involved in the decision. He said the step was taken after Israel's security cabinet approved the capture of Gaza City, requiring what he called a political signal from Germany.
He stressed the measure was narrowly targeted at a specific issue and said Germany and Israel remained closely aligned on all other key matters.
Merz announced the partial export halt last week, drawing criticism from some members of his CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union.
