German customers open to AI in banking, but fear data leaks: Survey

Many bank customers in Germany are broadly open to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in financial services, but concerns about data leaks remain high, a survey showed, reported dpa.

In a Civey poll of 4,000 online banking users commissioned by technology firm Solaris, 46.7% cited time savings as the biggest advantage of AI. Almost as many, 45.6%, said they were worried about potential data breaches.

Four out of five respondents said data security was the most important factor in making them feel safe using AI for banking or financial tasks.

Two-thirds (65.5%) said they would use AI tools that warn them if they are about to transfer money to a suspected fraudster.

More than half would use AI to suggest ways to avoid fees and charges (54.6%) or to analyse spending patterns and provide personalized savings tips (51.8%).

A majority also said they would rely on AI to help fill out forms (55.1%) or compile information for applications (52.8%).

However, only 37.7% said they would use a fully automated loan application process.

The survey's sponsors said this was likely due to fears that an application could be rejected arbitrarily or unfairly. Support rose to 55.4% if the loan process included human review and approval.
