Danish PM calls Greenland situation ´serious ´ after talks with Trump

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Thursday described the situation surrounding Greenland as "serious" following a phone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday, reported Xinhua.

Their 45-minute discussion covered Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, as well as bilateral trade, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Middle East, and NATO.

Speaking to reporters after briefing the parliament's Foreign Policy Committee, Frederiksen acknowledged the ongoing tensions over Greenland. "We are in a serious situation," she said. "We are doing everything we can to handle this as wisely and well as possible."

Trump said on Jan. 7 that he would not rule out military or economic measures to acquire Greenland and threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark "at a very high level" if it resisted his offer to acquire the territory.

Frederiksen confirmed that Trump did not retract his threats during their conversation.
