Bulgaria's court probes euro referendum block

Bulgaria's Constitutional Court on Tuesday launched an investigation into Parliament Speaker Nataliya Kiselova's order to reject a recent proposal on holding a referendum about the country's adoption of the euro, reported Xinhua.

The court said that it has initiated the proceedings, following a request by country's President Rumen Radev.

On May 12, Radev submitted to parliament the proposal to hold a national referendum on whether Bulgarians support adopting the single European currency in 2026. Kiselova rejected it the next day, citing constitutional and legal conflicts.

However, according to Radev's request to the court, only the National Assembly can decide on holding referendums.

Bulgaria, a European Union member since 2007, is considering switching to the euro on Jan. 1, 2026.
