Bulgaria-Serbia gas interconnector starts operation

The Bulgaria-Serbia gas interconnector, with a capacity of 1.8 billion cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan, started operation on Sunday, the Serbian president's office said in a press release, reported Xinhua.

The newly built, 109-km gas pipeline in Serbia funded by the European Union (EU) was launched on Sunday at a ceremony near the Serbian city of Nis.

Presidents of Serbia, Bulgaria and Azerbaijan, along with representatives from the Serbian government and the EU delegation to Serbia, attended the ceremony.

Serbian minister of mining and energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic said the project enables the positioning of Serbia as a gas supplier in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the further gasification in southern Serbia.

According to the Western Balkans Investment Framework, the joint initiative of the EU, financial institutions, bilateral donors and beneficiaries, the pipeline in Serbia cost 91.1 million euros.
