Berlin techno parade draws 200,000 ravers, 13 in critical condition
At least 13 people are in a life-threatening condition after attending a major street festival celebrating techno music in Berlin, emergency services said on Monday, reported dpa.
The Rave the Planet demonstration drew some 200,000 people to the German capital on Sunday, with partygoers calling for the protection of the city's world-famous clubbing scene, which has been officially recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.
Amid the festivities, 69 people were hospitalized, of whom 13 were in a life-threatening condition and a further 27 were severely injured, the emergency services said.
Spokesman Dominik Pretz from the Berlin fire brigade said the principal cause was intoxication, without offering further information on the nature of the drugs involved.
In total, 392 people had to be treated at the scene.
The Rave the Planet demonstration was first launched in 2022 by Dr Motte, a DJ who helped to found the renowned Love Parade in 1989.
The Love Parade was a major annual techno music festival and demonstration that ended after a deadly crowd crush in the western city of Duisburg in 2010.
Sunday's demonstration was held on the street between the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column in central Berlin.
Authorities spoke of a "peaceful" event with few disruptions amid rainy conditions.
