9 killed, 22 injured in Russian missile attack on Zaporizhzhia
At least nine people were killed and 22 others injured on Tuesday in a Russian ballistic missile strike on Ukraine's southern city of Zaporizhzhia, the region's governor Ivan Fedorov said on Wednesday, reported Xinhua.
The attack damaged 20 houses, a private clinic, and two educational establishments in the city center, Fedorov wrote in a post on Telegram.
Emergency teams are working at the site, where several people are believed to be trapped under the rubble. The ongoing search and rescue operation involves about 160 personnel and 50 units of equipment.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces on Wednesday launched a missile strike with Western high-precision weapons on the Taganrog military airfield in Russia's Rostov region, reported Xinhua, quoting the Russian Defense Ministry on Wednesday.
Six U.S.-made ATACMS ballistic missiles were used, the ministry noted, adding that two of them were shot down and the rest were deflected by Russian electronic warfare systems.
Falling missile fragments caused casualties among the personnel, the ministry said.
"This attack by Western long-range weapons will not go unanswered, and appropriate measures will be taken," it added.
In a major shift of policy on the Ukraine crisis, the United States in November authorized Ukraine to use U.S. long-range missiles to strike targets inside Russia's territory. Russia has repeatedly called it an escalation of tension around the conflict.
