4 Greek MPs indicted by EU prosecutors over farm subsidy fraud

Four sitting members of the Greek parliament and several former senior public officials are among the 22 suspects indicted by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) in Athens over a farm subsidy fraud, the agency announced Thursday, reported Xinhua.
Three of the lawmakers are accused of instigating abuse of trust, while a fourth is accused of instigating the unlawful management of European Union funds. One of the four also faces charges of instigating false attestation and attempted computer fraud.
The indictments are part of several ongoing EPPO investigations into what prosecutors describe as a large-scale organized fraud scheme involving EU agricultural subsidies administered through Greece's Payment and Control Agency for Guidance and Guarantee Community Aid (OPEKEPE).
Allegations against seven other sitting lawmakers have been dismissed. If convicted, the defendants face prison sentences of up to five years and fines.
According to the EPPO, the officials under investigation allegedly facilitated the fraudulent disbursement of EU agricultural subsidies to ineligible beneficiaries through forged documents and other unlawful interventions. The alleged fraud may have involved hundreds of millions of euros in EU agricultural subsidies.
The scandal has continued to reverberate through Greek politics. In April 2026, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis carried out his second cabinet reshuffle after several officials, including former Rural Development and Food Minister Kostas Tsiaras, stepped down as the investigation widened. In June 2025, five senior government officials also resigned over their alleged involvement in the case.
