2 killed, 20 injured in Russian airstrike on western Ukraine

A barrage of drones and missiles launched by Russian forces overnight on Friday targeted cities in Ukraine's western regions, killing at least two people and injuring 20 others, reported Xinhua, quoting local authorities.

In the city of Chernivtsi, a 26-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man were killed by "falling debris from enemy targets," regional governor Ruslan Zaparanyuk said on Telegram. Fourteen others were injured, with four in critical condition and fighting for their lives in local hospitals.

The attack on Chernivtsi damaged residential and administrative buildings, shops and vehicles.

In the city of Lviv, six people, including an 11-year-old child, were injured, and two industrial facilities were damaged, the Regional Military Administration reported.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi wrote on Telegram that over 20 commercial structures, 46 residential buildings, three university buildings, and city courts were also damaged.

In the neighboring Volyn region, 35 drones and two missiles targeted the city of Lutsk, said Governor Ivan Rudnytskyi on Telegram, adding that intercepted air targets damaged a house and several vehicles, with no casualties.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia had launched 26 cruise missiles and 597 drones at Ukraine overnight. About 20 missiles and the vast majority of drones were intercepted.
